Nov. 11--KATHMANDU -- Gas stations in Nepal have stopped selling gasoline over fears of being blamed by the public for widespread damage to motorcycles suspected to be caused by adulterated fuel.
Repair shops for Indian-built Yamaha, Kawasaki-Bajaj, Hero-Honda, and TVS-Suzuki brand motorcycles in Kathmandu are struggling to deal with a surge in engine repair jobs.
'Everyday, we get 50 new complaints of engine failure,' said Raju Chetri, general manager of the main Kawasaki-Bajaj outlet in Kathmandu.
With consumers flocking fuel pumps demanding compensation, gas stations have stopped selling gasoline, saying they will resume distribution only after the state-run Nepal Oil Corp. tests fuel quality.
'We can't run the risk of being seen as culprits in this scam that is not our doing,' said Lilendra Pradhan, chairman of Petroleum Dealers' Association

THERE is a fast-emerging Asia-Pacific 'green car' manufacturing centre, the brainchild of a government intent on transforming its vehicle industry..
It is in Thailand, Southeast Asia's most important carmaking centre, developed virtually from scratch in 15 years.
Next year, Toyota Thailand will begin producing Camry hybrids, the carmaker's third foreign manufacturing site for hybrid vehicles, a year before Australian taxpayer-subsidised Camrys begin production in Victoria.
The Thai industry is larger, more modern and far more export-focused than Australia's.
Thailand's eco-car project has been in planning and development for five years. It also has firm commitments from the three big Japanese manufacturers -- Toyota, Honda and Nissan -- plus Volkswagen, Mitsubishi and Suzuki. India's Tata Motors recently denied reports it was backing out.
The approved or pending eco-carmakers have committed to investments totalling 66 billion baht ($2.8 billion), with the first vehicles in production by 2010.
To qualify for the generous duty and sales tax exemptions, and eight-year income tax holiday attached to the eco-car project, the new vehicles must have engines smaller than 1.3l, achieve fuel consumption of 20km/l and emit less than 120g/km of carbon dioxide.
The makers are required to invest at least five billion baht and be producing 100,000 units by their fifth year of operations

Asian soccer powerhouse South Korea's Hyundai club and 40th Merdeka champions Vietnam U-23 Olympic team will make their debuts in the 11-day tournament which sill also include national teams from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and host Myanmar.
Myanmar was drawn in Group A along with Bangladesh and Indonesia, while Malaysia, Vietnam Olympic and Hyundai club are in Group B in the Third Grand Royal Challenge Cup 2008 slated for Nov.11-21, which will offer 15,000 U.S. dollars for the winning team and 7,500 dollars fro the first runners-up.
As a preparation for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship, Suzuki Cup (previously Tiger Cup), in Thailand and Indonesia in December, Myanmar to attend the Grand Royal Challenge Cup with its national team, while Indonesia and Malaysia also send their national teams to play warm-up matches for the forthcoming AFF Championship in which Myanmar and Indonesia will be in the same group.

MARUTI SUZUKI India Limited (MSIL) plans to refurbish all its cars under production so that it will be compatible with the stringent recycling norms, laid down by the European Union s End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) recycling norms by 2010.

Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced the Japanese launch of the Splash, a new user-friendly compact car combining brisk performance with outstanding roominess and comfort. The Splash, which is Suzukis fourth world strategic model, was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007 and has earned high praise since going on sale in Europe this spring. The Splash was built in Hungary by Suzuki production subsidiary Magyar Suzuki and is the first Suzuki-branded model to be imported into Japan.
Suzuki created the Splash using a platform based on that of the Swift, which is renowned for its high level of driving performance. It comprises a newly developed engine, body, chassis, and seats and has tuned them through extensive road tests in pursuit of world-class performance, handling, and ride comfort. Want to see top motorcycle racing stars, trials displays and 2009 off road motorcycles from a dozen top manufacturers plus a variety of kit from dozens of stands?
Well theres all this and much more at the Dirt Bike Show at Stoneleigh Park near Coventry between Thursday, November 13 and Sunday, November 16.
This is the ninth year of the show and promises to be bigger and better than ever before with a host of top names from the world of on and off road racing plus trials stars of past and present.

US auto maker Ford Motor today reiterated that its $500-mn capacity expansion plans for India and launch of small car are well on track despite the slowdown squeezing the growth of Indian auto industry. Hindalco Industries tumbled 10.2 percent to 60 rupees. Citigroup downgraded India's largest aluminium producer to sell from buy, citing demand uncertainty for metals and the company's high debt.

Iqbals 131st birth anniversary today
IslamabadThe nation will pay tribute to great national poet and philosopher Dr. Allama Mohammad Iqbal in connection with his up-coming 131st birth anniversary today (Sunday).
Social, cultural, educational and literary organizations have planned different programmes and activities to mark the day and pay homage to the man who envisioned a separate homeland for the Muslims of India which led to creation of Pakistan, a private TV news channel reported.
Educational institutions across the country will arrange speech, quiz and poetry competitions in connection with the day.
However, Fateha and Quran Khwani will be held at mosques and the mazar of Allama Iqbal. A large number of people will also visit his mazar to pay their homage to the poet of the East.
Allama Muhammad Iqbal was born on November 9, 1877 in Sialkot and died on April 21, 1938. He was a Muslim Poet, Philosopher and Politician.
His poetry in Urdu, Arabic and Persian is considered to be among the greatest of the modern era and whose vision of an independent state for the Muslims of British India was to inspire the creation of Pakistan.
His writings, poetry and sayings kindled a new light and aroused a sense of respect, self-realization and determination in the muslims. He has awakened the muslims of sub-continent and convinced them to demand a separate homeland where they can live with dignity and exercise their social, religious and cultural rights.
Iqbal was a strong proponent of the political and spiritual revival of Islamic civilisation across the world, but specifically in India; a series of famous lectures he delivered to this effect were published as The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam.
Being one of the most prominent leaders of the All India Muslim League, Iqbal encouraged the creation of a state in northwestern India for Indian Muslims in his 1930 presidential address.
Iqbal encouraged and worked closely with Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and he is known as Muffakir-e-Pakistan The Thinker of Pakistan, Shair-e-Mashriq The Poet of the East, and Hakeem-ul-Ummat The Sage of Ummah. He is officially recognised as the National Poet in Pakistan.AP

Obama calls Zardari, may meet soon
IslamabadPresident Asif Ali Zardari is likely to meet US President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden during his trip to the United States next week to attend an inter-faith conference.
A request for the meeting had been forwarded to the president-elects transition team, a source in the Foreign Office said on Friday.
President Zardari will leave Islamabad on Tuesday for the conference to be held in New York on November 13 and 14. Tentatively President Zardari is to return home on November 14, but he may extend the visit by a day or two, the source said.
Although, Obama is preoccupied these days with transition arrangements, the Foreign Office is hopeful of securing an appointment.
Meanwhile the US President-elect Barack Obama on Friday spoke by telephone with leaders of six US allies including Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari to thank them for their messages of congratulation, an aide said.
This afternoon President-elect Obama returned calls to several leaders who earlier in the week had expressed congratulations on his election, a member of Obamas transition team said in a statement.
They included President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, President Lech Kaczynski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain.
The 47-year-old future commander-in-chief spoke with the president on Friday in the midst of strained relations between the two allies.
According to Zardaris initial itinerary, he was to visit only New York, but now he is expected to travel to Washington and Chicago to meet Obama and Biden.
It is learnt that Zardari intends to use the opportunity to reiterate Pakistans resolve to deal with the menace of terrorism on its own.
The president also wishes to discuss the Kashmir issue with Obama who during his campaign had indicated that he would work with Pakistan and India to try to resolve the problem.
Obama has also indicated that he may appoint former US president Bill Clinton as his special envoy on Kashmir.
The president also intends to discuss with Obama and Biden the fast deteriorating economic situation of Pakistan and pursue the Biden-Lugar aid plan which calls for a $1.5 billion annual non-military spending to support Pakistans economic development.
